February through April 2006 - The Education Committee is On the Go
Our services were in great demand, as AAGS fulfilled a number of community
requests for genealogy presentations. On Feb. 27, AAGS held a session for
the Black Affairs Advisory Council (Social Security Administration
employees). Gwenzell Hopkins, Chair of the Activities Committee,
coordinated the session at the Cleveland Public Library on Lakeshore
Boulevard (photo at left).
Afterwards, with a little
assistance, Janet Ladell of BAAC (in photo at right) was
able to readily find an on-line 1900 and 1920 census of family in
Arkansas. At a March 29 event scheduled by Ward 9 Councilman Kevin
Conwell, approximately 60 seniors at Martin DePorres Center were ready
with birth, death, insurance, and other documents for research discussion.
On April 26, AAGS we took part in activities at Tri-C Diversity Day,
Western Campus.
The Tri-C Student Life Department raffled a DNA kit,
which was won by AAGS member Mildred Whitmore (photo at left). The kit will be
used to trace ancestry as performed on the PBS series, "African-American
Lives." We also provided heritage research expertise at a local church.
