September 30, 2006 - Clearing the Way at Highland Cemetery
Fourteen AAGS members headed to Highland Park Cemetery with the mission of clearing a section of flat, in-ground headstones. Alfreda Barnes spearheaded the project, which stemmed from visits to family gravesites where headstones along the path were covered or buried, making it difficult for someone to find or read the inscription. AAGS volunteers cleared approximately 270 headstones. Based on the weather and scheduling, the plan is to return again in 2006. If not, the project will resume next spring. All are welcome to pitch in.
(Update: On October 24, AAGS members returned to clear 180 more headstones.)
