AAGS Member Dorothy Swain knows firsthand the importance of protecting
your research documents. She recently encountered a house fire. She had
her genealogical info in notebooks covered in acid-free sheet protectors in
the room adjacent to where the fire occurred. Though there was plenty of
water damage throughout the house, her photos were still in good condition.
Some water had made its way around the sides so some edges were curled --
but her material was pretty much in tact. And she chalks it up to being
careful with handling and storing research documents. We are all thankful
that Dorothy and her family were unharmed. And Dorothy is also happy that
her documents were spared as well. She says, "I was so thrilled. It was
meant for these things to be saved." Her advice: "It pays to protect your
material"
